On Sunday morning a motorcycle stopped in front of the polling station in Tangermünde. Ulrich Siegmund got off the motorcycle. People waited outside, and they cheered. Siegmund went inside with his wife Julia. They voted. Then he came out again. People asked for photos with him, and he said yes. He told them that he felt happy about the day. He said Germany must stop fighting about politics. Siegmund is in a party called the AfD. He said he wanted the job of state leader only if his party won more than half of the votes.
In the evening the people counted the votes in the state of Saxony-Anhalt. The AfD got 43.8 per cent. This was the best result for the party in a German state. Five years ago the party got only half of this. The CDU of Friedrich Merz came second with 17.2 per cent. This was very bad for them. The SPD got 9.3 per cent. The Greens got 8.9 per cent. The Left Party got 8.6 per cent.
The AfD had a party in the city of Magdeburg. 77 per cent of the people in the state voted. People waved German flags. They hugged each other. Siegmund said they made history in the country. He said the people wanted change with his party. Donald Trump put the result on the internet. Other parties in Germany do not want to work with the AfD.
Siegmund was born in the town of Havelberg in October 1990. He went into the CDU when he was 18. Six years later he left it. In 2014 he went to the AfD. He always smiles. He tells people that everything will be fine. On Sunday people waited in a long line for a photo with him.
On Monday Merz talked about the votes. He said it was a very bad day for his party. He said nobody expected this.
